Social influencers are known to be great at making an impact and getting attention. Sometimes the audience skirt over the impact of the message the influencer intends. Instead, they focus their attention on things that are not relevant to the message.
Jenna Zwagil’s message: That anyone can go from broke to financially independent with the right business and the right mentor; just as she had.
She has spread this message on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube and been accepted with love from all nationalities. But, when she joined TikTok two weeks ago, the message was dismissed entirely, focusing on Jenna’s choice of hair. Her dreadlocks.
The reception by many of the viewers could objectively be seen as hostile and demeaning. Many Tik Tok users resorted to calling her derogatory names and even wishing death on her because of her skin tone.
This situation leads us to a subject burning bright in the minds of many at this time.
Cultural Appropriation.
Is it cultural appropriation for a person of a lighter skin tone to loc their hair?
Let’s look at history.
Hindus (from India) were among the first known to wear dreadlocks as a religious practice. From the furthest reaches of history, people of all nationalities wore dreadlocks: Germans, Africans Vikings, and even the ancient Greeks. No one group of people has an exclusive claim on it.
People have worn dreadlocks on all continents for thousands of years.
Jenna’s situation has sparked a wave of support from other social influencers who clearly understand the racial divide and criticism that wearers of locs face during this highly polarized time in society.
One such supporter known by her stage name “~9” has taken to the media airways as an advocate and defender of Jenna’s hair choice and her right to have whatever hair she chooses on her head.
~9, who also happens to be African American, points out what she believes is obvious. Viewers are focusing on the wrong thing. “Here is a Multi-Millionaire who is giving away Million dollar secrets and insights for free and people choose to focus on her skin color and hair.”
~9 has chosen to spread acceptance instead of division. “How do we expect to stop others from judging us by the color of our skin if we judge others by the color of their skin without listening to their message first?”
~9 goes on to state that “Locs are universal and if it speaks to your spirit as it has for Jenna and countless other people, then it is your duty and right to honor that expression of yourself no matter what the critics say.”
We reached out to Jenna for a comment. Here’s what she had to say “I think it’s good to point out that there are waves of support now. It seems like the tides are turning.” She is now seeing “more love than hate and that’s amazing.”
